From Gurgaon to Gurugram

The city was officially renamed from Gurgaon to Gurugram by the Haryana state government in April 2016 - a change popularly linked to the name meaning "village of the guru," referencing a mythological association with Guru Dronacharya from the Mahabharata, though that origin story is folklore rather than verified history. Today, both names are used interchangeably in everyday conversation and even in official contexts, and this website uses "Gurgaon" in places simply because that's how the city is still widely searched for and referred to.

Administratively, Gurugram is a district in Haryana with Gurugram city as its headquarters, sitting just southwest of Delhi and forming one of the most economically significant parts of the wider National Capital Region.

A Corporate and IT Hub

Gurugram's reputation rests heavily on its role as a corporate and IT/ITES hub - DLF Cyber City alone hosts a dense cluster of multinational offices, and commercial corridors like MG Road and Golf Course Road have grown into some of the most sought-after business addresses in the NCR. This concentration of employment is a big part of why Gurugram has attracted such consistent residential demand over the past two decades, since a large working population needs somewhere to live within a reasonable commute of these offices.

Connectivity That Shaped the City's Growth

NH-48, the national highway connecting Delhi to Jaipur and onward to Mumbai, runs through Gurugram and has anchored much of its commercial development along the way. More recently, the Dwarka Expressway (NH-248BB) has opened up an entirely new growth corridor - New Gurgaon - connecting Dwarka in Delhi to Kherki Daula on NH-8, and it's this corridor, rather than the older NH-48 belt, where Sector 88A and County Sector 88A Gurgaon are located.

Old Gurgaon vs. New Gurgaon

It helps to think of Gurugram as having two broad characters. "Old Gurgaon" - sectors closer to MG Road, Golf Course Road and the older parts of the city - has decades of built-up social infrastructure: established schools, hospitals, malls and a mature retail scene, but also denser development and, in parts, more congested roads. "New Gurgaon" - the sectors along the Dwarka Expressway and Southern Peripheral Road, including Sector 88A - is where most of the city's newer residential development has concentrated over the last several years, generally with wider roads, larger master-planned townships, and infrastructure still catching up in places, even as it grows quickly. Neither is simply "better" - the right fit depends on what you're prioritising, and we've tried to lay out both sides honestly on our Pros & Cons page, linked below.
